There’s something magical about planning western engagement pictures, especially here in Colorado. Here’s what to know to achieve that perfect vibe for your session!

Western Engagement Pictures

I got to spend the most beautiful day with Jace and Kayla, long-time family friends who wanted that perfect western vibe for their engagement photos. It was even more fun that Kayla had a specific vision in mind—she wanted a rustic, ranch feel with an old barn wood backdrop. My family was gracious enough to let us use their property for the photos, which set the scene for a truly authentic western photo shoot.

These kinds of sessions are always a bit more special. There’s a certain comfort when you’re working on familiar grounds with people you know. For Jace and Kayla, it meant I could bring out those natural, candid moments that tell their unique story.

Where To Plan Western Engagement Photos

When planning western engagement photos, choosing the right location is key. For Jace and Kayla, a ranch was perfect, but there are so many other options in Colorado, and you may not have access to a private ranch. Consider heading to the mountains if you want a rugged, breathtaking backdrop. The mountains are always a perfect option that you can make more western based on your attire.

Open fields offer a more laid-back, country feel, especially if you’re bathed in the golden light of sunset. This type of location really draws the attention to you as a couple, rather than having a busy backdrop. Or choose a rustic barn that will give you that weathered wood background.

Each couple has a unique spot that resonates with them – whether it’s a family property, a hidden trail, or even an old barn that brings back childhood memories. It’s all about finding a place that not only looks stunning but also feels meaningful.

What To Wear For Western Engagement Pictures

What you wear for your western engagement photos can affect the overall vibe for your session. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your outfits!

  • My biggest piece of advice is to go with outfits that complement the setting! Think denim, neutrals, boots, and hats. You want your clothes to feel as natural as the surroundings.
  • Neutral colors are always going to photograph best, but I love adding a pop of color, especially with the type of backdrops we have in Colorado.
  • I think it works really well for girls to do a few outfit changes to get different vibes for the photos. Typically, they’ll do one more casual outfit with jeans, a cute top and boots. And maybe their second outfit is a flowy dress and some tall boots. It’s a great way to try a few different western outfits!
  • You’ll see a lot of photographers suggesting against patterns, but I think it can really add a lot to photos. It should be a bit more of a subtle pattern, and it’s best if just one of you has a pattern, while the other wears a more neutral color.

Jace kept his outfits simple for this session – which is perfect for the guys! He wore jeans, boots, a hat, and two different collared shirts to switch it up. Kayla started with a very beautiful but simple neutral-colored dress and heels, then changed to jeans, boots, and a pop of color from her accessories. They definitely nailed it on outfits with a western vibe!
