I absolutely love surprises, and nothing beats the magic of a proposal! Hunter initially contacted me with the idea of planning a session around his proposal to Hanna. After a thoughtful phone conversation about the details and envisioning how to successfully pull off a surprise proposal with a photographer, we decided the location should be Red Mountain Open Space.
When we got to the parking lot, Hunter secretly handed me the ring box. Playing it cool, Hanna believed this was just a session for “cute couple photos,” so I started off our time like any other session. About 30 minutes in, I organized the setup and secretly signaled Hunter that it was time to propose. Handing him the ring, I hit record on my phone and instructed Hanna to “change positions and look at Hunter.”
She had the most excited and surprised look on her face when she realized what was happening! It’s truly so amazing to be a part of these special moments. After a short walk back for an outfit change, we celebrated with some champagne!
Planning a surprise proposal during a photo session is a fun way to ensure you capture the magic of your special moment.
The element of surprise, captured authentically on camera, allows you to continue to treasure these special moments forever!
I’ve been able to do a few sessions at Red Mountain Open Space, and it is a stunning location that reminds me a little bit of Utah! It’s located 25 miles north of Fort Collins, and this open space welcomes the public during the spring, summer, and fall months. However, it’s important to note that the Management Plan requires closures from December 1 to March 1 due to winter weather changes and wildlife requirements.
Red Mountain Open Space, spanning 15,780 acres, gives you deep crimson and tan rocks, rolling grasslands, and sandy washes. There is so much for everyone to explore with over 15 miles of multi-use trails from the trailhead. The trails also connect to two adjacent protected areas as part of the Laramie Foothills Mountains to Plains Project, which preserves over 55,000 acres of ecologically and culturally diverse landscape. It’s a truly gorgeous location!
