Picture saying your vows amidst towering pines, picturesque mountains, and a gorgeous waterfront backdrop. Here’s what you need to know to plan your Rocky Mountain National Park elopement!

Why to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is one of the most amazing places to elope for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure lovers. It is located in Northern Colorado and is about an hour outside of Denver. Rocky Mountain National Park is known for the abundant amount of lakes, hiking trails, wildlife and its incredible beauty.

All the seasons are different, but it’s pretty impossible to go wrong with choosing where to elope in this stunning park! Eloping in a national park in general has become more and more in demand, as it is a more affordable and beautiful option, over a typical wedding venue. It also becomes more of an experience, especially in a place like Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a popular destination for elopements for a reason – it’s truly breathtaking!

How to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

First of all, you will need to obtain a Special Use Permit. This permit costs $250 and you may get one up to a year before your big day. Before you apply you will need to figure out how many people will be at your ceremony including the officiant, photographer, videographer, etc.

Also, when you get a permit it doesn’t give you exclusive access to the site so there is a high chance that there will be other people checking out the sites as you say your vows. Please note that not all permits get approved, but the earlier you apply the more likely you’ll be approved. This is because the park only allows six weddings on any day in the park and only 2 per day at each specific location. If you want to apply for a permit or want more information, you can find that here.

You are also limited in where you can plan your ceremony. Unfortunately, you can’t exchange your vows at the top of Trail Ridge Road, Dream Lake, at Sky Pond, or some other gorgeous location you’ve seen or have been to. You can of course hit up those other locations for adventure and pictures, however! For this elopement, we did a private ceremony in Estes Park, before heading to RMNP for couples portraits to accommodate this. This is something your photographer is happy to help you plan out!

When to Plan a Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement

Timing makes all the difference in capturing the Rockies’ at it’s finest. Each season brings its own highlights, and the key is finding the one that aligns with what you have envisioned for your day.

Spring (March-May)

Spring breathes new life into the park- the melting snow, budding wildflowers, and flowing streams! The weather remains cool, and you may even catch glimpses of snow at higher elevations, adding a pinch of winter charm to your spring elopement. But late spring is truly gorgeous and you’ll avoid the rush of summertime tourists!

Summer (June-August)

Summer is a peak season for RMNP, bursting with vivid wildflowers, green forests, and crystal-clear lakes. With all the trails open and accessible, you’ll have plenty of options for stunning elopement spots. All you need to keep in mind- it’s also the busiest time of year, so planning around early mornings or weekdays is best.

Fall (September-October)

Fall in the Rockies is nothing short of enchanting, with aspens transforming into golden groves and the air carrying a fresh chill. The vibrant autumn colors + early winter charm make the most stunning backdrop. There will be fewer visitors, which means you can enjoy more solitude and scenic vistas for your photos.

Winter (November-February)

Dreaming of a winter wonderland? Think of December/January in the Rockies. Snow blankets the mountains and drapes the pine trees, and the park becomes a tranquil escape. While access to some trails is limited, the pristine, white scenery and cozy, intimate feel are ideal for couples dreaming of a romantic winter elopement.

Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Location

Each corner of the Rocky Mountain National Park is an absolute natural gem that is ideal for elopements. Here are some of my favorite elopement locations within RMNP:

Sprague Lake

Say your vows in front of a shimmering lake, with reflections of mountain peaks on the lake’s surface that create an iconic backdrop. That’s the kind of romance Sprague Lake offers. The best part? It’s just a short walk from the parking lot, making it both convenient and breathtaking.

Bear Lake

Surrounded by rugged peaks, vibrant aspen trees, and the stunning reflection of Bear Lake, this location can be an iconic backdrop for your RMNP elopement. The dramatic combination of rugged mountain views and the serene lake will add a timeless setting, especially during quieter hours at dawn or dusk.

Moraine Park

Moraine Park Visitor Center Amphitheater is located 2.7 miles from Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on Bear Lake Road. It is filled with wooden benches and gives off a rustic vibe so this location would be great if you plan to have guests at your intimate wedding. The amphitheater is surrounded by pine trees and has a view of Moraine Park, which creates a beautiful setting for an elopement.

Hidden Valley

True to its name, Hidden Valley is a secluded, hidden oasis surrounded by mountain views, wildflowers, and a charming wooden bridge. The picture-perfect spot is wheelchair accessible and equipped with restrooms, making it an ideal choice for inclusive elopements.

Upper Beaver Meadows

With sweeping meadow views and majestic mountain peaks, Upper Beaver Meadows is perfect for a private + peaceful elopement. Away from the crowd, the place captures the eternal beauty of the Rockies. This ceremony location has large open meadows and views of the Continental Divide, which is absolutely gorgeous! And it’s the best spot for sunset ceremonies when golden rays cast a warm hue.

Other Options in RMNP

The best thing about an elopement is the flexibility – you can visit one or many different locations! There are countless other spots that you can explore in RMNP for your elopement, like Trail Ridge Road, Lily Lake, Alluvial Fan Bridge, 3M Curve, Copeland Lake, and so on. There is no shortage of stunning backdrops here!

Where to Stay for Your RMNP Elopement

Create a full experience for your elopement by finding the perfect place to stay! Here are some great options in Estes Park and nearby:

  • The Stanley Hotel: A luxurious and iconic choice in Estes Park with rustic charm and grand suites.
  • The Inn on Fall River: Nestled along a sparkling mountain stream, this inn is ideally located between Estes Park and the park’s entrance.
  • Riverside Cabin (Airbnb): A cozy, secluded Airbnb just 10 minutes from the park. It even features a hot tub perfect for an intimate escape.
  • Lake Shore Lodge: The only waterfront hotel in Lake Estes with views of the Rockies and Longs Peak.
  • Offgrid Lodge in Estes Park: Enjoy a remote stay surrounded only by aspens, where you can experience nature and have access to RMNP.
